Our tips for your safari trip in Kenya

Kenya has a lot to offer! Below you will find an overview of our personal tips and the highlights that we think you should see:

  • A balloon flight over the Maasai Mara. This is a fantastic sight, especially during the ‘Great Migration’ in July.
  • Spend the night in a local hotel so that you experience more of the ‘normal’ Kenya.
  • Take a night safari. You see different and/or more active animals than during the heat during the day.
  • Kazuri Beads in Nairobi. A social project and workshop where fantastic beads are made and sold.
  • Take a bout trip to Crescent Island. The former Out of Africa filming location where the animals were left behind.
  • Hell’s Gate; a park that you can walk through and an inspiration for many films, including the Lion King.
  • A visit to the elephant sanctuary of Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi. This is where young elephants (up to about 3 years old) are taken care of that have been found in the parks without a mother or herd.
  • Ol Pejeta lodge (Lake Nakuru National Park): A visit to this lodge is highly recommended because of the old colonial atmosphere that is evoked by the decor (luckily not by the treatment of the staff).
  • Also in Lake Nakuru National Park you will find the Rhino Sanctuary. Here you will find the largest group of black rhinos in Kenya. There is an information center where you can get information about the various rhino species that live in Kenya. Near the information center you will find the cemetery of the rhinos that were once sheltered here.
  • The Gedi Ruins, about 100 km above Mombasa. An abandoned town from the mid-15th century.
  • Meru National Park is a very green park. Known from the film Born Free, about Elsa the lioness. Because of the greenery it is more difficult to spot game, but that makes you sometimes feel like the only one in the park. Due to the abundance of greenery, the park also exudes a completely different atmosphere from the much drier parks such as the Tsavo’s and Amboselli.
